One will need a screwdriver for removing the cover plate to retrieve the connection. After conforming that there is no electricity in water heater, detach wire nuts and cut off wires going to the water heater.

After doing this, cut off the water supply to the heater. Connect garden hosepipe to pump out remaining water at the bottom. Open the hosepipe outside or to a drain. Now open the valve of drain from tank and remove the hot water at a nearby sink. Due to this, the pressure will be relieved and air will enter into the lines, which will help in draining fast. Try to drain water from tank as much as possible. To get more help, open the pop- off valve that is placed at the side of the tank near the tap.

There should be two wire lines, located at the top of the tank. In addition, there should be a stamp of H & C near the wire lines at the top of the tank. On the line, that is marked cold, wrap a piece of tape on it. This will ensure that a person hook it up right on the new heater. Disconnect both of the lines and disconnect the pipe from pop off valve. Detach any fastening, used for holding the hot water heater on place.

Now, for replacing hot water heater, two persons will be required as it may be heavy. Check new water heater to ensure that everything is hooked up in the same way. Most of the water heaters require installing nipples. One can get nipples from old heater, but it is suggestible to buy new pair from market. After replacing hot water heater in suggested way, one can install a new hot water heater easily.
